What I Learned While Remodeling My Home

Me and my wife bought a fixer-upper a few years ago with every intention on converting it into our dream home. The problem was, we were not nearly as skilled in home construction and remodeling as we thought we were. After a few failed projects, we needed to really take a step back and reevaluate our plan. We knew there was no money in the budget to hire a contractor to do everything, so there were some skills we were going to have to learn on our own. After several months of actively seeking out the information we needed to get the job done, we were finally able to successfully remodel the kitchen in our new house. While the house is still a work in progress, we are successfully accomplishing new tasks every day. In this blog, I hope to bring together all of the information we learned along the way.

How Do You Know When To Replace Your Home's Impact Windows?

In areas where hurricanes and tornadoes are a common concern, impact windows are a fairly common implement in residential properties. Created with a sturdy frame and glass that does not shatter or break easily, these windows offer a substantial amount of protection for your home. In the event of high winds, wind-hurled debris is less likely to break the window at all. While these windows are designed to last a really long time, there can be times when they should be replaced. Here is a look at a few signs that should tell you that it may be best to go ahead and replace your impact windows.

The windows are starting to show signs of degradation.

Even impact windows do start to break down with time and exposure to the elements. For example, impact windows with wooden frames may have some degradation of the wood itself due to exposure to sunlight and moisture. Just like your ordinary windows, if the impact windows are obviously starting to break down, it is best to have them replaced because they will not be providing the amount of protection that they should. Bringing in a good impact window replacement service to assess the windows can help you find issues that your untrained eyes may not see.

The windows have been damaged during a storm.

Even though your impact windows may stay intact during a storm, it does not necessarily mean that they have not sustained any damage. Make sure you take the time to examine the windows after a major weather event and look for signs that the windows have been damaged, such as:

  • Cracks in the glass
  • Damage to the frame of the window
  • Obvious areas of stress on the glass

If the windows have anything about them that makes them look as if they may not be as durable as they should be, it is a good indication that they need to be replaced.

The windows are a bit outdated.

In some situations, just the fact that the windows are older can be a good indication that it is best if they are replaced. As it is with most manufactured home implements, these products just keep getting more advanced. Therefore, if you have impact windows that have been in place for a few decades, there is a pretty good chance that the units available today are going to be better suited for protecting your home.
